STUDENT STORIES

Vanessa is unlike many Genesys Works students in that she was very involved in extracurricular activities during her high school career. Prior to joining Genesys Works, Vanessa was a part of the yearbook team and marching band. She was a class officer and held down two after-school jobs. Vanessa was the type of student who liked to join a successful group and help make it better. However, she was surprised when her yearbook teacher told her she should consider joining Genesys Works.

The fact that her teacher was recommending her for the program gave her a new level of confidence. Vanessa successfully interned at Marathon Oil for three years and El Paso Corporation for 1.5 years during college. When Genesys Works founder Rafael Alvarez needed a student representative to travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the White House with him, he called upon Vanessa.

"Genesys Works helped me make college a possibility."

Just a few years later, Vanessa graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown with a degree in Computer Information Services. She is a Help Desk Analyst at EOG Resources, where she is one of three other former Genesys Works participants on the payroll. Her new career path allows Vanessa, her mother and sister to celebrate Christmas and birthdays together without worrying about working on holidays. Not surprising, Vanessa is busy planning her high school reunion with her classmates from Jefferson Davis.
