STUDENT STORIES

Jose was born in Mexico and moved to the United States at 10 years old. As the eldest of his siblings, he has naturally been a leader in his family. His confidence and grit have been paramount to his ability to overcome struggles throughout his early life. Jose spent many years in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes learning to speak and read English. His parents did not attend college, so Jose grew up feeling the pressure to navigate his postsecondary plan on his own.

This was an important reason that Jose was drawn to the Genesys Works program. He knew the framework existed to help students apply to college. This college counseling was invaluable to Jose, but a positive bi-product of participating in the program was that he impressed at his internship at Reliant Energy. So much so that they asked him back during his time in college, and he was eventually hired full-time after graduating from the University of Houston.

“My internship gave me a chance to develop professionally.”

In typical older brother fashion, Jose encouraged his siblings to participate in the program during their high school experience and his younger sister, Mary, successfully completed the accounting track. Jose is an example of the ripple effect of the program. He put in the effort in order to change his future, and he is actively trying to help change his family and his community as well. Jose’s tenure at Reliant helped position him for a new opportunity at Dynegy. He is now working just a few blocks away from his previous job in the downtown area, but the transition seems monumental to him. Jose is excited, ready and eager to contribute positively to his new IT team.
